Sherlock Holmes has it right

This little trip from Wednesday evening was a literal breath of fresh air. Mountain air. I always enjoy going up to Provo Canyon, especially when the weather is so perfect. I even needed a jacket just for good measure! Autumn officially begins in 9 days, people. We must be ready.

Plus, nature is just so dang gorgeous.

I came across this quote while I was reading a short story out of my complete Sherlock Holmes collection last night. Sherlock comments on the beauty of a rose, and I think he makes a beautiful observation:

"Our highest assurance of the goodness of Providence seems to me to rest in the flowers. All other things, our powers, our desires, our food, are all really necessary for our existence in the first instance. But this rose is an extra. Its smell and its color are an embellishment of life, not a condition of it. It is only goodness which gives extras, and so I say again that we have much to hope from the flowers."

Just as Sherlock does, I receive assurance in the existence (and goodness) of God just by looking at the flowers and the beauty around me. Something so beautiful can't just... happen. The hand of God is evident in the design of this earth. Those flowers give us hope in something greater.
